Resident Engagement Platform

Client

Urban & Civic

Project overview

The aim was to create a web application that would help residents in new communities to integrate more quickly and effectively, providing them with essential information about their area, updates on local developments, alerts about traffic issues, and a platform to connect with local community groups. The app also needed to highlight community facilities, green areas, parking, walking routes, and events, while being adaptable to different community brands.

Problem

New residents often feel isolated in freshly developed housing communities and it can take a significant amount of time for them to feel at home. A digital tool was required to facilitate this integration process across multiple communities, each with its unique branding to ensure a seamless and personalised resident experience.

Approach

The approach involved extensive research to understand residents' needs through surveys, interviews, and focus groups, prioritising features based on these insights to ensure maximum value. Collaboration with Urban & Civic provided detailed community information. Wireframes were developed to visualise the app's layout and functionality, followed by user testing to refine the design. A comprehensive design system was created to allow customisation for each community's branding. The final app design, informed by user feedback, offered a clean, intuitive interface to help residents find information, connect with others, and stay updated on community events.

Research and Discovery

Understanding Resident Needs: I conducted extensive research to understand the specific needs and challenges faced by residents in newly built communities. This involved surveys, interviews, and focus groups with residents and stakeholders.

Prioritising Features: Using insights from the research, I prioritised the features that would address the most critical needs of the residents, ensuring the app would provide maximum value from the outset.

Further Information: I collaborated with Urban & Civic to gather detailed information about each community, including facilities, local groups, green spaces, and event schedules.

Wireframing and User Testing

Wireframe Development: I created wireframes to visualise the layout and functionality of the app. These wireframes focused on ease of navigation, user-friendly design, and ensuring that all essential features were easily accessible.

User Testing: The wireframes were tested with a group of potential users to gather feedback on usability and feature prioritisation. This iterative testing process helped refine the design and ensure that it met user expectations and needs.

Design System Development

Design System Creation: I developed a comprehensive design system that could be customised to align with the unique branding of each community. This system included color palettes, typography, iconography, and component libraries, ensuring a cohesive and adaptable design.

Final Solution Design

Finalising the Design: Based on the feedback from user testing, I designed the final version of the app. The design focused on a clean, intuitive interface that made it easy for residents to find information, connect with others, and stay informed about their community.

Community information

Detailed information about local facilities such as shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, and pharmacies.

Local events

A listing of community events to help residents stay engaged and involved.

Community groups

A platform to find and join local resident community groups, fostering connection and collaboration.

Community Alerts

Real-time alerts about traffic issues and other important notifications.

Interactive Map

An interactive map highlighting green areas, parking spots, walking routes, and other points of interest.

Outcome

The web app was successfully launched across multiple Urban & Civic communities, receiving positive feedback from residents for its usability and comprehensive feature set. The adaptable design system allowed for seamless integration with each community’s unique branding, and the app significantly enhanced residents' ability to connect with their new environment and each other.

Conclusion

This project showcased my ability to conduct thorough research, prioritise user needs, and design a scalable digital solution that enhances community engagement. The successful implementation and positive reception of the app demonstrate my skills in user-centered design, iterative testing, and creating adaptable design systems. This case study exemplifies my capabilities as a product designer and my commitment to delivering impactful digital experiences.
